Story

Not all people have happy memories of childhood.  Not even in Tishomingo County.

Lyrics

Well, Mama is a waitress in a local café
She works nights & weekends, & cleans houses by day
Daddy is a trucker, spends his weeks on the road
Mama says “he ain’t a bad man, he just totes a heavy load”
And we can’t help but tremble when he walks thru the door,
Won’t somebody help us we can’t take it any more

And every weekend, the neighbors pull their shades
Turn their radios up high & look the other way…. When Daddy’s home.

While Mama’s at work, we take care of ourselves
Bonnie’s only 8, but Tom’s 10, & I’m 12
When Daddy gets home, we do our best to be quiet
‘cause when Daddy gets mad, there’s gonna be an awful fight
And we can’t tell nobody ‘bout the things that go on When  Daddy’s home

And every weekend, the neighbors pull their shades
Turn their radios up high & look the other way…. When Daddy’s home.

I found Daddy’s gun, laying on the closet shelf
I picked it up & prayed, God help me do this by myself
The shot rang out light thunder, Lightning flashed across the room
He fell against the table -NOBODY moved
As the tears ran down my face I breathed a sigh of relief
Maybe now our little home can have a little peace

Well, the neighbors knew what happened that night
But they swore it was an accident and the sheriff said, that’s right
Now, DADDY’S GONE….Now, DADDY’S GONE….Yeah, DADDY’S
